LyCel® YEAST-BASED NUTRIENTS STRONGLY
PROMOTE BACILLUS THURINGIENSIS GROWTH,
SPORE AND Δ-ENDOTOXIN FORMATION

[SCIENTIFIC POSTER]

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a gram-positive, rod-shaped and spore-forming bacteria naturally found in various environments such as soil, water and grain dust. Bt has the ability to produce during sporulation crystalline inclusions called parasporal insecticidal crystal proteins or δ endotoxins that are lethal for numerous pest insects. Bt based products are the most successful and the most widely used in the biological pest control market.

The use of Bt natural endotoxins is increasing due to an environmentally conscious culture and the rising awareness about the chemical dangers. Bt based and the other biopesticides have the great advantage to be organic without persisting in the environment.

Biopesticides producing micro-organisms can be cultivated in liquid, solid and semi-solid media. Most of their commercial production is currently performed through batch fermentation with a mixture of complex media containing a carbohydrate source usually glucose, minerals and a nitrogen source. Besides, many studies concluded that yeast extract (YE) was the most effective nitrogen source for promoting both growth and spore formation in Bt and related species.
