Industrial propionic acid production is as relevant as always, with an increasing need to supply the compound to support manufacturing of herbicide, synthesizing of complex molecules for uses in pharmaceuticals, and in preserving foods.
Microbial production of propionic acid has long been a desired sourced of the compound, however has been plagued with an inability to produce high titers and the production of undesirable co-metabolites. Previously, Procelys has shown that differential yeast extracts can be employed to help alleviate this lynchpin, with NuCel® 632 LQ yielding desirable results in growth rate, lag time, and metabolite production in Acidipropionibacterium acidipropionici.
To further this claim, here we showcase how an addition of a peptone can affect biomass and metabolite production, using NuCel® 632 LQ as he main nitrogen source during fermentation. Our results indicate that inclusion of yeast peptone gives way to higher biomass which can be beneficial for pre-seed cultures.
In addition to the peptone work presented, we highlight other liquid yeast extracts and their performance in this bacterial model.
