Bifidobacteria are keystone organisms composing healthy gut flora and are among the first species to colonize the infant intestinal tract. Bifidobacterium longum has been established as the most abundant of these species in the gastrointestinal tract to remain through adulthood, and its use as a probiotic is linked to numerous positive health benefits.
Having evolved symbiotically to live in the gastrointestinal tract, B. longum has developed several, specific nutritional requirements that are readily provided by the human host. To achieve the high cell densities required for large scale production of B. longum for probiotic supplements, the culture medium must contain these certain nutrients, like pantethine and nicotinic acid, for optimal growth.
